Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Acts 18:25-26
Apollos had been instructed in the Way of the Lord; and he spoke with burning enthusiasm and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the Way of God to him more accurately.

Thought for the Day: Though Apollos didn’t fully understand this Jesus, he understood the way of Jesus well enough that people could accurately come to know Jesus through what they saw in Apollos.  Of course, Pricilla and Aquila had to hone some of his ideas a bit, but the teaching wasn’t so far off that Jesus was unrecognizable.  My concern is that much of what people associate with Jesus today has no resemblance to the Jesus of scripture, and what some people teach about Jesus would leave a Pricilla and Aquila utterly confused.  In a recent article on CNN’s website, Qasim Rashid wrote about Muslim clerics in Iran whose quasi faith “would be unrecognizable to the Prophet Mohammed” (CLICK HERE for the article).  Too often what we think is the Muslim faith (hatred, violence, terrorism) would be unrecognizable to most Muslims and would represent nothing of the teachings of Mohammed.  Those of us who claim to be followers of Christ must be very aware how our actions might be doing something similar…even to the point where what we are doing in the name of Jesus would be unrecognizable to Jesus himself.

Prayer: This faith thing isn’t easy, Lord, and my fears and selfishness can often leave me defending some pseudo-religion all in the name of Jesus.  Forgive me when I have made Jesus into something he never was and never desired to see among his followers.  Amen.
