Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 1st Corinthians 8:1-3
Now concerning food sacrificed to idols: we know that “all of us possess knowledge.” Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.  Anyone who claims to know something does not yet have the necessary knowledge; but anyone who loves God is known by him.

Thought for the Day: Shane Claiborne is a well known author and Christian activist, and yesterday (March 13, 2014) in the blog, Red Letter Christians, he wrote a piece entitled: The First Year of the Pope’s Revolution.  Shane wrote, “The most remarkable thing about the Pope is that what he is doing should not be remarkable.  He is simply doing what Popes and Christians should do – care for the poor, critique inequity, interrupt injustice, surprise the world with grace, include the excluded and challenge the entitled.”  From everything I’ve seen, the Pope is a man who understands the power of love to build up others, yet he does so with such humility.  He is, in fact, an incredibly brilliant man, but his meek spirit sees no need to claim personal knowledge.  Instead, he chooses love that does not seek to build self above others.  The Pope is setting a pretty high standard, and as one who needs to work on my humility, he is an excellent example.  Though again, I don’t believe he would agree with me.

Prayer: I’m certain there are many things I need from you, O Lord, and one of those is a spirit of humility.  Amen.
