Scripture: Proverb 13:7 (the Message)
A pretentious, showy life is an empty life; a plain and simple life is a full life.
Thought for the Day: Though I am not Catholic nor have I ever been Catholic, I have watched the selection process for the new Pope with a great deal of interest. I found it fascinating how one commentator, upon hearing the news of the new Pope, suggested that he had won. Among the words to describe the selection of the new Pope, I do not believe winning is a good choice. If anything, Jorge Mario Bergoglio (now known as Pope Francis I) got the short straw on this one. It might be a great honor, but it is a position that no one who wants it should actually receive it. For what the press has so far reported about this man, I am impressed. His reputation is that of simplicity, and even after he was named archbishop with all of its perks, he remained committed to his very simple life. He refused to use the chauffeured limousine at his disposal. Instead, he continued to ride the bus or use his bike. I cannot predict how my fellow pastor will use his new position, but the potential for significant transformation among our Catholic brothers and sisters is great. Even as a Protestant, I pray for Pope Francis I and his new calling, and what I see in his life to this point is a model for both Catholics and Protestants.
Prayer: Wherever I am in life, Lord, give me the ability to see how you are using others as a model of faithfulness. Amen.
