Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 15:12
The younger of them said to his father, “Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me.” So he divided his property between them.

Thought for the Day: I know I have read this verse of scripture more than 1000 times, but something new recently jumped off the page. The father in the Parable of the Prodigal Son doesn’t simply give half the inheritance to the youngest son. Instead, the father splits everything with the two sons which would have left the father with nothing. Had the oldest son decided to follow in his younger brother’s footsteps, it would have left the father in a very difficult predicament. I wonder if one of the possible teachings of this parable is about a God who chooses to give us everything and then trusts us to figure it out. There is plenty of grace in the story, but in that grace, the Father (God) gives complete freedom for the sons to squander the gift or to be a good steward of the gift. Once again, this parable challenges me in a new way.

Prayer: You are generous, O Father of Grace, and you provide me room to fail or to succeed or to experience a combination of both. May your grace that inspired your generous spirit be my inspiration to be the best steward of the gifts entrusted to me. Amen.
