Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: John 15:26-27
When the Companion comes, whom I will send from the Father—the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father—he will testify about me. You will testify too, because you have been with me from the beginning.

Thought for the Day: The Companion, Advocate, Comforter, Counselor or Parakletos in the Greek – this is the gift promised by Jesus. This one that has its origin with God is shared with us and will be the Parakletos for us in the life of faith. I am reminded of Elie Wiesel, the Holocaust survivor who wrote, “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” These are powerful words from an individual who knew incredible suffering and injustice, but in those words, I believe we gain a hint of what the Parakletos is for us. This gift from God is one who sides with us, and refuses to remain neutral in our moments of weakness and agony. The Parakletos reminds us of God’s faithfulness and unwavering love, a presence that confirms our hope — that no matter what, we shall not be left alone.

Prayer: O Spirit of Truth, remind us of who you are and your commitment to us in our moments of doubt and despair. We need an advocate, comforter and counselor – and you have given us that, and even more, in the Parakletos. Thank you! Amen.
