Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: John 4:4
Jesus had to go through Samaria.

Thought for the Day: There are times when only a few words communicate much more than one might expect. Though there were ways around Samaria, and so technically Jesus did not need to go through Samaria, there was some other force that made it necessary (“had to go”). It is a theological and storyline necessity. In John’s Gospel, we have just heard the well known verse, “For God so loved the world…” (John 3:16), and now Jesus demonstrates what loving the world actually involves. In this story, Jesus had to step beyond acceptable categories and geographic boundaries to embody the Good News of a love that would not and could not be limited by the insecurities and fears of humanity. To fulfill the message of a God whose love was willing to give it all away, Jesus had to go through Samaria.

Prayer: May I follow Jesus, not only to see the far-reaching character of your love, O Lord, but to see where it is that I must go on his behalf. Amen.
