Scripture: 1 Kings 10:14-15
The weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred sixty-six talents of gold, besides that which came from the traders and from the business of the merchants, and from all the kings of Arabia and the governors of the land.
Thought for the Day: Though this may sound impressive, it is actually the beginning of Solomon’s decline. The six hundred and sixty-six is probably not an exact amount, but a metaphor. We should not interpret it in light of modern day religious fiction or horror movies which have twisted its meaning, but it does symbolize that which does not support the values of God. Solomon was hoarding wealth, using slaves to build bigger and more impressive buildings, and increasing his army to protect this growing prosperity. His nation was becoming like the Egypt of old that had enslaved his people. I appreciate the Bible and how it doesn’t hold back the minority opinion. Too often history is written from the perspective of the powerful which is usually little more than propaganda. Scripture, on the other hand, portrays people with all their flaws and failures. Even the powerful and respected get called out and put in their place.
Prayer: You know my story, Loving God, and I am grateful for the way you embrace me regardless of my shortcomings. Amen.
