Ecclesiological Etchings

Guest Devotional: Jerry James, Elder

Scripture: Galatians 3:1-3, NLT
Oh, foolish Galatians! Who has cast an evil spell on you? For the meaning of Jesus Christ’s death was made as clear to you as if you had seen a picture of his death on the cross. 2 Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the law of Moses? Of course not! You received the Spirit because you believed the message you heard about Christ. 3 How foolish can you be? After starting your Christian lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort?

Thought for the Day: Talk about “tough love”! The Apostle Paul may be just a little bit frustrated with the church at Galatia, which has come under the influence of a group of Jewish Christians who were wanting to layer on the requirements of the Mosaic Law for those non-Jews who had accepted the Gospel. Paul is imploring the church to disregard such teachings and to keep focused upon the Spirit; the gift they received freely through grace.

We should also guard against trying to add too many “side boards” to our Faith. The season of Lent is a very appropriate time to spend in reflection and even confession. However, we should not get so entrenched in our ritual that we do not engage in actionable worship and service. The most meaningful aspect of Lent is the Event which occurs at its conclusion. Get yourself ready to act on that wonderful good news.

Prayer: Lord, please help us keep our hearts and minds open to your gentle encouragement and to recognize where we can be of service in your Glorious Name!  Amen.
