Scripture: Genesis 18:4
Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.
Thought for the Day: Abraham had an unexpected encounter with visitors (divine envoys) alongside the oaks of Mamre. In this encounter, Abraham acted in a proper way by showing hospitality, including the encouragement that his visitors rest. The word in the Hebrew is Sha`an, which can also be translated as lean, stay or trust. How often does a lack of trust keep us from true rest. Anxiety – brought on by uncertainty – prevents an experience of calm and peace. Just because you are lying in bed with the lights out does not mean your mind isn’t racing and your heart rate isn’t elevated. Trusting God creates a greater opportunity for true rest of the body, mind and spirit. Simply sitting down does not equate with being obedient to God’s invitation to seek Sabbath rest.
Prayer: Holy Creator, may I learn how rest is dependent upon trust. All other breaks in life will be too congested with all those things that keep us from a true Sabbath with you. Amen.
