Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Mark 11:4-6
They went and found a colt tied to a gate outside on the street, and they untied it. Some people standing around said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” They told them just what Jesus said, and they left them alone.

Thought for the Day: Have you ever had things work out better than you ever imagined them working out? Maybe I’m wrong, but I can see the disciples being a bit skeptical that simply telling the folks, “the master needs it,” will actually work when it comes to getting the colt. Do they have a back up plan, like sneaking back later and stealing it? I’m sure they were relieved when it worked out so well. I read this passage alongside my strong belief in freewill. I believe fully that those individuals who seemed to be fine with the disciples taking the young donkey still had the capacity to say, “No!” Is it that God calls people who appear ready for the YES, or does the Spirit work in ways that put the odds on God’s side? I believe that like my suggestion of the disciples having a back up plan, God also has a back up plan. Our NO might cause a slight pause in the forward movement of God’s hope for the world, but so far, the human NO has never derailed it. God has an infinite number of alternative options because God’s love will ultimately win.

Prayer: May I listen for your Spirit to speak, O Lord. May I continue to learn of Jesus and his ways so that I am better able to distinguish between my wants and your calling. I do not wish to be part of the chorus of NO’s you probably hear daily. I want my life to be a YES to your kingdom and its values. Amen.
