Scripture: Deuteronomy 5:12ff
Observe the sabbath day and keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you.  Six days you shall labor and do all your work.  But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work… Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm;

Thought for the Day: There is a pattern to the practice of Sabbath.  It is not some inflexible ritual that should cause fear, but human beings are taught and shaped by repetition and reoccurrence.  Richard Foster, perhaps the best known writer on Spiritual Disciplines, wrote: “If we ever want to know the degree to which we are enslaved by the passion to possess, all we have to do is observe the difficulty we have maintaining a Sabbath rhythm.”  Foster recognized how those who do not practice this weekly pause are more likely to be consumed by the allure of the world.  Children who have a rhythm to their life, including times of rest, are healthier both physically and emotionally.  Procrastination or inconsistency rarely produces the desired outcome.  Those who practice Sabbath Rest put themselves in a pattern that even God uses, a pattern that teaches us to begin every week by honoring the God who started it all.

Prayer: Creator God, I give you praise for the rhythm of life – from my heartbeat to the movement of the sun – that teaches me to find fullness of life in the regular practice of Sabbath Rest.  Amen.
