Ecclesiological Etchings

Intro: During Holy Week, seven staff members from Cypress Creek Christian Church will reflect on the same passage of scripture from Luke’s Gospel. Today, it is John Frey…

Scripture: Luke 23:33-34
“When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.’ And they cast lots to divide his clothing.”

Thought for the Day: The first-century understanding of forgiveness was much richer than how we often use the word today. For Jesus, forgiveness was a complete dismissal of the sin, its consequences (including punishment) and welcome of the sinner back to full fellowship within the community. Throughout the New Testament, the willingness to forgive others was a distinct sign that the believer was truly living as a follower of Jesus. How hard is it to forgive when someone who sins against you is a close friend or family member? Have you ever forgiven someone that completely? Who are you being called to forgive and restore to full fellowship? Today is the day to show your distinctness as a follower of Jesus by forgiving someone as completely as Jesus did. You and they will be transformed when you do.

Prayer: Let me reflect your character, oh God, and model the example set by your Son as I offer grace and forgiveness today. Help me to wipe the slate clean and renew a joyous relationship as we both are restored to fullness, just as you first restored me to a full relationship with you. Amen.
