Scripture: Galatians 5:22-23
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Thought for the Day: This passage can be overwhelming. That’s quite a list. How do we even begin to imagine how to lead a life full of these sorts of things? As Philip Kenneson tells us, in his book about the fruit of the Spirit, Life on the Vine, we begin to imagine . . . with our imagination:

I am firmly convinced that one of the greatest obstacles to living the Christian life in contemporary society is an impoverished imagination. Most of us will find it difficult to live a life we cannot imagine. (This, by the way, is the same principle that makes advertising so effective: ads help you imagine what your life would like with such and such a product.) But how will we imagine a life different from the one we are currently living if we do not immerse ourselves in a different set of narratives that display life and its purposes differently?

It is unfortunate that many of us were taught to leave our imaginations behind, in childhood. Imagination and creativity are the gateways to transforming our lives . . . and the lives of others.

Prayer: God, we open ourselves to what you can do in our lives and to the possibilities that lie within us, perhaps in ways that we have never imagined.
