Scripture: Luke 6:35
But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for the Lord is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
Thought for the Day: When I was an RA in the college dorm, I had a rather shy freshman tell me how he had come to college to make a friend or two. This seemed like quite a journey to make in search of friends. In fact, he had moved almost a 1,000 miles to come to college. It reminds me of the sign hanging on the boss’s desk at a grain elevator where I worked. It read: “The world is full of nice people. If you can’t find one, be one.”
In the passage from Luke’s Gospel, Jesus offered a way of making friends wherever you go. His approach was to be proactive with love and kindness, not waiting for someone to act in a way that was worthy of friendship. At Cypress Creek Christian Church, we have cast the vision of putting love first in all things. We do this in response to a God who has and continues to act preemptively.
Prayer: Teach me to act as you have acted, O Lord. Let me reach out, not because someone has finally met the threshold of worthiness, but because every human being is deserving of love and kindness. Amen.
