Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Psalm 8:3-6

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor.  You have given them dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet…

Thought for the Day: On this day in 1710, an act of Great Britain’s Parliament –  the Statute of Anne – was ratified.  The Statute of Anne was the first modern Copy Right Law, and it recognized authors as the owners of their unique works. The law gave authors the ability to choose and regulate who would print their works, and the copyright term was for 14 years. It could be renewed for an additional 14 years. On the anniversary date of this law, I got to thinking about the copyright infringements upon God’s unique works. God created us with special gifts for the service of God’s kingdom, yet too often other powers infringe upon God’s right to those gifts. Our gifts are used for all kinds of unholy, unjust or simply unpurposeful (if that’s such a word) objectives.  Let’s allow God to keep the rights to our gifts, and not just for 14 or 28 years, but for the length of our existence.

Prayer: You are full of glory, O Holy God, and your beautiful Spirit manifests itself within every human soul. Assists us as we recognize and claim the unique way your Spirit is at work within us. Amen.
