Scripture: Ezekiel 20:19
I the Lord am your God; follow my statutes, and be careful to observe my ordinances…
Thought for the Day: The Hebrew word we translate as ‘follow’ is yaw-lak’. It means: to walk or move along with. In scripture, when we are invited to follow the statutes or the teachings, we are being invited to join a trek already in progress. These statutes or teachings are what God has already been doing, and the hope is for those who desire to be faithful to walk in the footsteps of the Lord…the One who has already ventured down this path. It is a path of righteousness and justice, where Sabbath is honored and the Lord is venerated (Ezekiel 18). Too often we think of following a certain teaching or statute as an intellectual exercise, but it is an experience of the mind AND the spirit and body. To be faithful in this journey, each of us will be required to redirect our lives and take a jaunt with all of who we are. We will need to turn our spirits, change the direction of our thinking, and actually walk (or run or drive) some place we would not have chosen on our own. This is more than just mastering a set of rules. It is following closely in the ways of God.
Prayer: Lead me, O Merciful God, to live a life that is respectful of your greatest commandments: to love you and my neighbor. Amen.
