Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Colossians 3:20
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is your acceptable duty in the Lord.

Thought for the Day: I was recently listening to the Bill Cosby routine when he talks about having children.  In the beginning, when Bill is talking about he and his wife making the decision to have children, he said: “…we were afraid to ask God for specific things.  We felt it might be too much.  We simply said, ‘Please God, give us a healthy child,’ and we left it at that…not knowing that God is a generous God, but also has a sense of humor.  And if you leave that much open for God, some wonderful jokes are going to come about.”  I laugh each time I hear the routine, but I think in this situation, Bill Cosby was trying to emphasize the unexpected craziness of parenthood.  And I do not believe he was trying to make a theological statement on the power and purpose of prayer.  Prayer isn’t a check list of requests by which we design our perfect child.  Prayer is the magnificent mechanism by which we tap into the goodness and love of God, those gifts that will help us deal with all the unexpected craziness that comes with parenthood and other life challenges.

Prayer: Merciful and Generous God, I give you thanks for the blessing of love which I find in you, and as I receive this marvelous gift, it provides me daily strength for all life throws my way.  Amen.
