Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 20:13-14
Then the owner of the vineyard said, “What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.” But when the tenants saw him, they discussed it among themselves and said, “This is the heir; let us kill him so that the inheritance may be ours.”

Thought for the Day: After Jesus entered Jerusalem, he took the opportunity to continue his teaching, including this parable. Often it is seen as nothing more than a hint toward the pending death of Jesus, but there are numerous other important ideas being expressed. In rereading it this morning, I was caught by the words, “…owner of the vineyard…” We have a tendency to think of the world and everything in it as our possession to use as we wish. But as the hymn writer put it, “This is my Father’s world; I rest me in the thought of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; God’s hands the wonders wrought.” It was my grandmother who always said, “When you borrow something, return it in better condition than when you received it.” This helps us to remember who the owner of the vineyard truly is, and these acts of respect and care demonstrate our thankfulness to the owner.

Prayer: Lord, I offer you tangible expressions of gratitude for all the gifts you provide. Amen.
