Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Psalm 5:8-10
Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness because of my enemies; make your way straight before me.  For there is no truth in their mouths; their hearts are destruction; their throats are open graves; they flatter with their tongues.  Make them bear their guilt, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; because of their many transgressions cast them out, for they have rebelled against you.

Thought for the Day: On this day in 1930, the BBC announced that there was no news to report.  There is a part of me that would like to go a day or two without news.  We have become a news addicted society, and it has gone beyond our desire to know information.  The freedom of the press and our right to know information was not for the purpose of empowering news outlets to create news so they could fill in the 24-hour news cycle.  In the last 48 hours, I have heard reporters ask some of the most ridiculous questions.  Some represent, in my opinion, a complete insensitivity to the grief of individuals, but other questions are clearly being asked in hopes of provoking an answer that can be spun in a way that gives another hour of unneeded news.  I’m not suggesting this Psalm was intended for the media today, but I find the universal truthfulness of the Psalms to shed light from their historic context and into our own.  The folks in the media are not our enemies, but how much is our addiction to media encouraging their throats to become open graves and their egos to compliment their tongues?  We need to encourage truth-telling above profits and sensationalism, and we need to seek God’s assistance in making God’s way “straight” before us all.

Prayer: Giver of Truth, keep before us the high calling of truth-telling for the sake of a healthier and more righteous world.  Amen.
