Scripture: 1st Peter 1:3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead…
Thought for the Day: Some scholars believe 1st Peter is an early baptismal liturgy, including prayer, instruction, charge, etc. Baptism becomes the moment of rebirth in the life of a Jesus follower. It is both a reenactment of the resurrection and a claiming of the resurrection. The act is not necessary for God, but it is a gift to us humans as the ritual teaches and forms us in our understanding of rebirth. Resurrection is more than a historical event. It has ramifications. I remember an old comic book entitled, Phoenix Resurrection Aftermath. Though the word aftermath is often associated with a destructive storm, I believe resurrection can have an equally dramatic aftermath…but for good. And for those of us who have experienced rebirth within the baptismal waters, we discover firsthand the aftermath of Christ’s resurrection…repercussions that stretch into our reality and beyond.
Prayer: Whether I remember my baptism or not, I know you continue to work through it, O Lord, to change the landscape of my soul. May the transformation experienced in the waters continue to have ramifications far into the future. Amen.
