Scripture: Romans 12:11
Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord.
Thought for the Day: I am reminded of the scene from the movie, Ghostbusters, where the Ghostbusters are in jail and the guard says, “Okay, Ghostbusters! The mayor wants to see you guys. The whole island’s going crazy!” To which Dr. Peter Venkman says to the other people being held in jail, “I gotta split. The mayor wants to rap with me about some things.” Well yesterday, a few clergy from the area got to rap with the mayor of Houston about some things. We met with Mayor Annise Parker (by the way, she grew-up in the Disciples of Christ denomination) to discuss issues facing the City of Houston and the surrounding communities. Whether it was homelessness, predatory lending or human trafficking, the message was clear: We must find ways of working together for the sake of every human being. I celebrate this nation’s vision of maintaining a clear separation between religion and government, for we did not set out to create a Theocracy but a respectful Democracy. At the same time, people of diverse faith convictions can often find common ground and seek creative ways of partnering with government in the strengthening of communities, neighborhoods and the people living in them. I look forward to future conversations, believing that we are called to be respectful caretakers of this portion of God’s creation.
Prayer: Merciful God, provide wisdom and humility to all leaders, whether they are in government, church or business. Let each of us seek the common good for the sake of building stronger communities. Amen.
