Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Galatians 6:9
So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up.

Thought for the Day: On this day in 1415, John Wycliffe’s writings were declared heretical. Wycliffe was considered an early voice of challenge to the Church (at this time, there was only one real church), a precursor to the the Reform Movement that would come 100 years later. He disagreed with the Roman Catholic Church on many subjects, but specifically he believed that interpretation of the scriptures belonged to the individual. He translated the Bible into common English to make the scripture accessible for the people. As you can imagine, his actions did not sit well with the Church that claimed to hold complete authority over scripture. He continued to challenge the Church throughout his life, dying in 1384. Wycliffe’s mission in life was to get the scriptures to the people in such a way that they could read, discuss and interpret for themselves. In all of his struggles, he could have let go of his mission, but he did not. He remained tenacious throughout his life.

Prayer: I do not want to grow weary in my faithful work, O Lord of the Harvest, and so I seek your assistance when my commitment begins to wane.  Amen.
