Scripture: Psalm 62:2
God alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall never be shaken
Thought for the Day: These words reflect the common beliefs of ancient Israel. They would have been words that a young Jew would have grown up hearing again and again, yet we all know the difference between hearing a basic belief and making that belief our own. I was talking with a young woman five or six years ago, and she was telling me about her experiences of church. They were not positive, and they consisted of lots of fighting and angry people. Church going people were constantly getting upset and leaving the congregation. Two ministers were fired because people didn’t like something they said. This young woman described a setting of instability and volatility. I can understand why she no longer goes to church to find rest from the storm, support in unstable times. There was nothing in the life of the congregation that felt stable for this young woman, and so she sought such stability elsewhere. Let the church be very aware of how it can reflect or confuse the central characteristics of God.
Prayer: O God, may your unshakeable grace be known in every aspect of church life: worship, classrooms, board meetings and fellowship gatherings. Amen.
