Scripture: 1st John 5:1-2
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments.

Thought for the Day: Like so often in scripture, we find an author responding to a conflict within the community of faith. In this case, 1st John is dealing with the questions: Who is Jesus and what does it mean to say he is the Christ? What I appreciate about the response is its invitational character. It is not simply a convoluted philosophical description, but a discussion that creates opportunities for real engagement. There are times, whether it be worship or study, for us to speak in the abstract. In fact, it is important for us to rationally think through the implications of belief and the language we use to describe our beliefs. At the same time, it should all lead to practical expressions of our convictions. We dream and reflect so we can better love both God and neighbor. Love is never an abstract.

Prayer: Teach me, Loving Lord; encourage me to explore and discern; lead me to a place where I can contemplate the far-reaching character of your mercy. And then help me move to a place where my reflections can respond to the real needs of others. Amen.
