Scripture: Psalm 98:1a
O sing to the Lord a new song…

Thought for the Day: As many of you might agree, I enjoy many of the good old hymns. Of course, what defines a good old hymn depends on age, denomination, ethnicity and geography. Since coming to Cypress Creek Christian Church, I have had a fascinating thing happen more than a dozen times. I have been standing at the backdoor greeting folks and had someone say, “I didn’t know that closing hymn. I wish we would sing something I knew.” And three or four people later, someone say to me, “I haven’t sung that closing hymn in years. It is one of my favorites. I wish we would sing that one more often.”

Of course, the author of the Psalm declares that we are to sing a new song to the Lord. It won’t be a song that some folks love or even a few. It will be a new song for everyone because it is truly new. The song itself is a response to something new and wonderful that God is doing, and it is as if the author recognizes the power of a new song to lead us forward. The ability of music to shape or reinforce values, beliefs and vision is too often underestimated. I want to sing some of the good old hymns, though for some people, those good old hymns may be new songs. Whatever the case, let us be willing to sing a truly new song to the Lord, one that reinforces the new things God is doing in our midst.

Prayer: Whether I have a trained voice or one that should be drowned out by the sound of a train, I pray that when the time comes to sing a new song to you, O Lord, I will sing it with joy and excitement. Amen.
