Scripture: Exodus 3:7-8
Then the Lord said, “I have observed the misery of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their cry on account of their taskmasters. Indeed, I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them from the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the country of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites…”

Thought for the Day: What does it mean for the enslaved to know that their cries have been heard? Let’s be clear—it does NOT mean that everything is hunky-dory. Being heard is does not immediately solve problems or alleviate suffering. But being heard – really heard – means that an individual who has been enslaved, dismissed or marginalized has actually been recognized and his/her humanity has been acknowledged. It is the first step toward empowerment, hope and joy. What do you think happened among the enslaved Israelites when they first heard Moses say to them, “The Lord has heard your cries…” As those who had been tossed to the curb by the Egyptians, these people suddenly felt recognized and appreciated. They were not someone else’s objects to be used and manipulated. Instead, they were appreciated by the Lord, and the Lord was going to do something to demonstrate their value. How does the church continue to demonstrate to the world that God appreciates all of humanity and desires to see each person empowered to live life to the fullest?

Prayer: You have acknowledged me, O Lord, and have reached out to me with the liberating love revealed in Jesus. Though the world may attempt to belittle me, I can sing with gratitude because I am a person of worth according to your good word. Amen.
