HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY
Scripture: Proverbs 6:20-23
My child, keep your father’s commandment, and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. Bind them upon your heart always; tie them around your neck. When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you. For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life…
Thought for the Day: This Proverb is both a high calling to a child, but also a lofty goal set before a parent. The assumption of this Proverb is for parents to teach their children with tools that will shape these impressionable individuals so they might have a faith-centered and life-giving existence. Of course, there is a pre-assumption to this assumption – that such tools already exist within the life of the parent. On this Mother’s Day, I give thanks for all those mothers (and mother-like figures) who made room for these tools within their own lives. In doing so, these tools were available when the opportunity of teaching presented itself. I happen to know (or have known) a number of these women, and I use words like: Grandmother, Mother and Wife to describe a few of them.
Prayer: Merciful God, give us all a spirit of gratitude for the women who have enriched our lives with the teachings of faith. Amen.
