Scripture: Proverbs 11:25
A generous person will be enriched, and one who gives water will get water.

Thought for the Day: Rev Bruce Barkhauer did a presentation last fall here at Cypress Creek Christian Church. Recently, he posted the following on Facebook: “If generosity was easy, it wouldn’t be considered a discipline. It is a choice – choose wisely.” I wish generosity was something that came naturally to everyone, and that we would freely give water to anyone in need (remember, the Israelites were a desert people and so water was a symbol of everything that was precious). Because survival is written deeply into our genetic code, we react rather intensely against anything that threatens us. Generosity goes against that genetic inclination, so it takes regular practice and training to move to a place where we are able to trust and freely relinquish even when our inside says, “Oh no! We can’t survive without it.” What’s wonderful is when we practice and discover that we not only survived but had the joy of seeing how our generosity blessed another.

Prayer: O Spirit of Abundance, let me live with you and discover an attitude that allows me to let go even when my gut is nervous and feeling panicky. It is in that experience of trust that I will grow. Amen.
