Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 1st Corinthians 12:1, 4-7
Brothers and sisters, I don’t want you to be ignorant about spiritual gifts. …There are different spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; and there are different ministries and the same Lord; and there are different activities but the same God who produces all of them in everyone.  A demonstration of the Spirit is given to each person for the common good.

Thought for the Day: Tomorrow is Pentecost Sunday, and as I often say, it is one of my favorite Christian holidays for it has yet to be commercialized. Pentecost gives us a period of time every year in which we focus special attention on God’s gift of the Spirit – both then and now. The Spirit is described as God’s creative power in the creation story; it is described as the means of discernment and wisdom; it is described as the power of resurrection and new life. The Spirit is also involved in the gifts each of us has for building up the Kingdom of God here on earth. These Spiritual Gifts are unique to every person, but each is given for the common good. There are a plethora of gifts, but the purpose of these gifts needs to be centered on the mission God is putting before us. A single congregation cannot be all things to all people, but the Spirit has given something to each of us for this common good. When we let go of trying to be all things to all people, and instead, allow the Spirit to guide our mission through the gifts we have been given, the outcome is almost always joy, enthusiasm and a true sense of purpose.

Prayer: Create within us a willingness to allow your Spirit, O Holy God, to guide us toward our faithful purpose. Amen.
