Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Acts 2:1-4
When Pentecost Day arrived, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound from heaven like the howling of a fierce wind filled the entire house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be individual flames of fire alighting on each one of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them to speak.

Thought for the Day: Happy birthday to the church! I won’t request that you break into song, but I believe it is important for the church to celebrate this day and to be reminded that it has a birth date. A birth date says that we are more than a building or an institution. A birth date reminds the church that it is a living entity, and as a living entity, the church needs to recognize who gave it life and who continues to give it life. Ministers, Church Boards and ecclesiological structures might be necessary for the policies and procedures that help guide the church in its basic work. These structures are often the way the government recognizes the legitimacy of the church, but at the end of the day, none of it defines or empowers the church for its mission. May all of us who make up the church be reminded that we -collectively- are the church only by the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Continue to fill and use us for your work, O Lord God who gifted us with the Spirit. Amen.
