Ecclesiological Etchings: 05-16-13

Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Nehemiah 4:6
So we rebuilt the wall, and all the wall was joined together to half its height; for the people had a mind to work.

Thought for the Day: Last night, I started the first part of my Fashioning A New Framework for Leadership class with a parable of sorts.  The old story says,

At a Midwestern fair, many spectators gathered for an old-fashioned horse pull (an event where various weights are put on a sled and pulled along the ground).  The grand-champion horse pulled a sled with 4,500 pounds on it.  The runner-up was close with a 4,400-pound pull.  Some of the men wondered what the two horses could pull if hitched together.  Separated, they totaled nearly 9,000 pounds, but when hitched and working together as a team, they pulled over 12,000 pounds.

It is a good reminder to all of us within the church that we are a community, drawn together for a common purpose.  By linking ourselves to one another, we are capable of doing far more than what we could individually.  But even beyond the idea offered in the story, by faith we are linking this body of believers to an additional force.  This additional companion in the work of the church is God.  Just a few people with a common vision can often get a lot done, but add God to the mix, and the potential is well beyond anything that can be imagined.

Prayer: Grant us your presence, O Lord, so those endeavors we set our minds to are not only your endeavors, but endeavors infused with your strength and presence.  Amen.
