Scripture: Psalm 23:3 (the Message)
True to your word, you let me catch my breath and send me in the right direction.
Thought for the Day: Many people will read those words and say, “That doesn’t sound very familiar.” It is how Eugene Peterson (the translator of the Message) renders the Hebrew words that we better know from the King James Version as, “He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” Peterson does take some liberties by changing it from the 3rd person, but I must confess how I – in reading those words – found myself taking in a deep breath. And in doing so, there was a slight reduction in my tension and stress. How often are we so frazzled, caught up in the chaos, that we don’t even take notice of just how far off track we really are? Some times even a momentary pause, with a deep inhale and exhale, is enough to bring us back to a God-awareness. In that moment, we are better able to feel the nudge toward the right and more faithful path.
Prayer: Whether it’s my feet or my mind, please help me slow down. Good and Gracious God, meet me between the inhale and the exhale, in that moment where we are better able to relinquish what distracts us and rediscover the trust needed to follow you. Amen.
