PART 1
Counsel the second of the Sevenfold Gifts, St. Bonaventure
Second, grant us counsel, by which we may follow in your footsteps on the path of righteousness.
Scripture: Psalm 106:12-14
Then they believed his words; they sang his praise. But they soon forgot his works; they did not wait for his counsel. But they had a wanton craving in the wilderness, and put God to the test in the desert…
Thought for the Day: I don’t know about you, but I have seen what I would call a “fabulous ability to forget” in my own life. One moment I am living my life by the lessons I have learned firsthand, and in the next moment, I am reliving the mistakes and poor choices of my past. Some of the smartest folks around have fallen into the same hole on more than one occasion, even after they marked it and claimed its danger. God has an amazing ability to take our brilliant failures and use them as teaching moments. God offers us counsel through our own experiences, and often in the immediate aftermath, we are very willing to accept this counsel. You would think as intelligent creatures we would continue to follow this divine counsel, yet for whatever reason, we have a “fabulous ability to forget”. Maybe this is why the Israelites told and retold the stories of faith. They did so believing that somehow in the retelling of what had occurred in the past, God could use the past as means of offering counsel into the present.
Prayer: We know you as the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace. As people who have made many mistakes, we know quite well what not to do, yet we still need your assistance and advice so we do not repeat the failings of the past. Be our Wonderful Counselor this day and every day. Amen.
