Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Revelation 21:2-4
And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.”

Thought for the Day: A respected colleague, and simply one of the better ministers in any denomination, is Rev. Dr. Dawn Weaks who serves at Raytown Christian Church in Raytown, Missouri. Recently she posted on Facebook the following:

“There will be a day with no more tears” sang Jeremy Camp on my run this morning. Remembering all the pain of my 20’s when I didn’t know how I could be all I felt God calling me to be in a part of the church that didn’t hire women preachers. Today I get my doctorate in ministry and serve in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) which gives me nothing but support in every way. And I am here to testify that there IS a day with no more tears, only joy! And there will be for you, too!

Our God desires nothing more than to see a world where mourning and crying and pain will be no more, and as Rev. Weaks points out, this is not simply a vision of some distant heavenly realm, but a reality coming down out of heaven from God and into our daily lives. It may not be fully manifest, but there are moments when it is so evident and unmistakable that we are nearly brought to tears…but tears of joy. Thanks Dawn!

Prayer: O Holy God, where your reign of beauty and wholeness is breaking in around us, let us name it and claim it, and through our celebration, draw others into it. Amen.
