Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Colossians 1:15 (the Message)
We look at this Son and see the God who cannot be seen. We look at this Son and see God’s original purpose in everything created.

Thought for the Day: After our Pentecost Services on Sunday, I had someone make a casual comment about my sermon that was also very insightful. He said, “We believe that we can know who God is because we know who Jesus is. If the Holy Spirit is God’s Spirit, then why don’t those who claim to have the Spirit dwelling within them look more like Jesus?” It sounds a little like one of Euclid’s Common Notions: Two things equal to the same thing are also equal to each other. Whether it is mathematical or philosophical, the point is well taken. If I claim that God’s Spirit is dwelling within me and God’s Spirit is the same as God, then shouldn’t my life resemble Jesus who is the human expression of God? I’m not suggesting perfection, but if my life doesn’t look anything like the life of Jesus, then it might be time to take a closer look at the spirit that is dwelling within me. It may not be the Spirit of God.

Prayer: Lord, may you help me to grow in my ability to receive you, and in receiving you, become more like you. Amen.
