Scripture: Matthew 10:39
Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.
Thought for the Day: I have returned to Rob Bell’s new book, What we Talk About When We Talk About God, on numerous occasions lately…especially the many sections I highlighted on the first time through the book. One line in particular felt true the first time I read it, but since that first reading, I have seen its truthfulness alive and well within the life of many churches. Bell wrote, “Have you ever been part of an organization and the experience soured because you realized there wasn’t any larger mission or purpose or motivation beyond its own preservation?” The church has really perfected self preservation at the cost of its mission. When are we going to realize that our existence is dependent upon our ability to give ourselves away?
Prayer: Free me, Merciful God, from the idea that my job is to preserve or save the church. You’ve already done that. Instead, call me to be a contagious agent of your self-giving love. Amen.
