Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 2nd Peter 1:5-8
For this very reason, you must make every effort to support your faith with goodness, and goodness with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with endurance, and endurance with godliness, and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love. For if these things are yours and are increasing among you, they keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Thought for the Day: There are times in life when I’ll hear someone say, “All you need is faith.”  There is of course truth to that statement, but faith is not as easy as the phrase makes it sound.  It is not as simple as a quick trip to Target where you can find some faith at a good price.  In this passage from 2nd Peter, we read how faith needs support.  The word literally means, “To bring alongside” for the purpose of adding stability.  In the passage, we have seven things that a Christian should be intentionally working on so as to strengthen and add stability to faith.  It is not a onetime event, but a work in progress where goodness, knowledge, self-control, endurance, godliness, mutual affection and love are to be developed through an ongoing commitment to the spiritual disciplines.

Prayer: Venture with me, Father God, along the ever-growing journey of faith.  And along the way, may I continue to cultivate those things that will give my faith steadfast resolve.  Amen.
