Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Proverbs 4:7
The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever else you get, get insight.

Thought for the Day: My sermon yesterday invited people to think about the Noah story in light of the Epic of Gilgamesh and the ancient Samaritan Flood story.  After worship, I had someone approach me and say, “If you would have told me where you were going with today’s sermon, I would have told you that it would destroy the scriptures.  I was wrong.  It opened them up.”  For far too long, clergy have assumed their congregations were somehow incapable of hearing what was taught in seminary.  There is no question that what is known as the historical critical method of study is challenging and forces people to rethink what they often assumed, but those who are willing to venture down the road often find a whole new and amazing world within scripture.  I’m glad to be serving a congregation willing to explore with me the incredible treasures found within scripture.

Prayer: You gave me a spirit, O Lord, but you also gave me a mind.  Help me to create a faith balanced in both spiritual and intellectual growth.  Amen.
