Scripture: James 1:21-22
Therefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves.
Thought for the Day: In his provocative book from 2010, The Future of Faith, Harvey Cox pointed to a necessary path that too few Christians take. He wrote, “Once I realized that Christianity is not a creed and that faith is more a matter of embodiment than of axioms, things changed.” Both Harvey and James (sounds like a cheap wine cooler) see the expected connection between the word being implanted and the word coming alive in deeds. Even amidst the diversity that is Christianity in our world, there should be enough individuals who with the implanted word would be capable of uniting their good deeds to radically change the world. I would suggest that part of our difficulty is found in the desire to carry around the word like a nifty show-and-tell object, but never allowing it to dwell within the self fully.
Prayer: As I strive to open myself to you and your life-giving word, O Lord, I pray that you will continue to find ways to dwell more fully within me. Amen
