Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Ephesians 5:10
Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord.

Thought for the Day: I must confess that these words of scripture spoke to me with their simplistic candor. Though I could spend a lifetime trying to figure out all the things that please the Lord, my Christian faith calls me to look at the life of Jesus for some very attainable options. What I don’t understand are people whose ways of ‘pleasing the Lord’ in no way reflect a man who welcomed and loved all those who had been scorned by the culture. Knowing all the possible ways we could please the Lord is probably beyond the capacity of any individual, yet the best known teachings of Jesus are a good place to start. For instance — loving the Lord with your whole self while loving your neighbor as yourself. That alone would challenge most of us, yet I believe the acceptance of the challenge by means of a good attempt is pleasing the Lord.

Prayer: From a table where the ostracized were welcomed to a street corner where lepers felt his touch, I pray that I can learn how to please you, O Lord. Amen.

Love God, and your neighbor as yourself. Can you imagine? Let it begin with me!
