Scripture: John 1:45-46
Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
Thought for the Day: I’m not a fan of rats. Actually, I can probably state that a bit more clearly — I find rats absolutely disgusting. Over the years, I have had only a few encounters with rats, and let’s just say that they were not enjoyable. With that said, I learned a few days ago that rats are being trained and used in the detection of land mines in Cambodia. It is estimated that there are between 4-6 million unexploded land mines and other ordnances in Cambodia, the source of hundreds of deaths and injuries every year…mostly to children. To my surprise, rats are much more effective than dogs – and their weight will not set off a land mine. A person using a metal detector and a dog can clear a 200-square foot area in 2 – 3 days. Rats can do the same area in as fast as 35 minutes.
For me, this was a good reminder of how our perceptions can dramatically change. What I saw as disgusting and useless was, in fact, a source of great good. Where else is God demonstrating such a thing? Have you ever thought of yourself in those terms? What do you think God believes?
Prayer: I can feel like a rat in the rat race of life, but then I hear your words of grace, O Loving Lord, and I realize that I am so much more than what I might have thought. Amen.
