Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Ezekiel 20:19-20
I the Lord am your God; follow my statutes, and be careful to observe my ordinances, and hallow my sabbaths that they may be a sign between me and you, so that you may know that I the Lord am your God.

Thought for the Day: The other night, we made the drive to watch the Astros and the Royals play a little baseball. The rain was coming down heavy – we had to take an alternative way to the stadium, and we went on roads that very few folks have probably traveled. At times, the rain was nearly blinding. We hit three different detours on backroads that forced us onto very narrow s0-called streets. Our GPS was the only thing that kept us going, though there were a few moments when we had to make quick decisions based upon flooded roadways. Once we reached our destination, I was exhausted.

It got me to thinking about how God guides us amidst the storms, yet even with God’s guidance, there are moments when we make rational decisions based upon what is right in front of us. The GPS had no advice for the flooded roadway, though common sense didn’t need the GPS. So often people who follow God like a GPS are disappointed when they find themselves stuck in water. They are shocked that God didn’t tell them to turn. Could it be that God is saying to us, “My spirit leads you, but please employ your brain as well. I gave it to you for a reason.”

Prayer: Lead me, Lord, with both the guidance of your Spirit and the wisdom instilled within my brain. Amen.
