Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Matthew 4:24-25
So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought to him all the sick, those who were afflicted with various diseases and pains, demoniacs, epileptics, and paralytics, and he cured them.  And great crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

Thought for the Day: The musician Carlos Santana said, “Your mind is a magnet. You don’t attract what you need or what you want; you attract who you are.” Jesus was wholeness, and he attracted those who yearned for wholeness. No congregation is a perfect example of wholeness; we remain a community in formation. Yet unhealthy and dysfunctional congregations draw more unhealthiness and dysfunction, but it tends to be those who are content in their troubles. These unhealthy congregations attract those who have accepted chaos as the norm, and who often wish to add  to the problems. For this reason, local congregations need to be diligent in their work toward genuine health so that they can be a magnet for those yearning for wholeness.

Prayer: In your love, O God of Universe, we seek to be those who attract – those who engage and entice others with a compelling witness of health and joy. Amen.
