Scripture: Psalm 9:2
I will celebrate and rejoice in you; I will sing praises to your name, Most High.
Thought for the Day: It is only July 3, but by the sounds of things, I might have guessed that last night or the night before was the 4th of July. I appreciate people celebrating, and I never want to suggest that anyone should calm the celebrations during this time in which we as Americans remember our common story. At the same time, is shooting a whole gross of bottle rockets at 1:15am a few days before the actual holiday a genuine way of honoring the day. I write that with a bit of a grin on my face, yet like so many things in life, I do wonder if our way of celebrating is often the best way of honoring the reason for the holiday. In the Christian life, how often do we see Christmas or Easter celebrations that do not seem to reflect anything about God’s love being born in the form of defenseless child or God’s love in human form dying in act of selflessness. Go ahead and shoot some fireworks, but make sure you acknowledge the values and beauty of our common life together.
Prayer: With a joyful heart, I sing praises to you, my Creator and King. Allow for my celebrations in life to reflect why it is that life should be celebrated. Amen.
