Ecclesiological Etchings

Have a happy and safe 4th!

Scripture: 1st Kings 10:9
“Blessed be the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and set you on the throne of Israel! Because the Lord loved Israel forever, he has made you king to execute justice and righteousness.”

Thought for the Day: Have you ever been given a task, yet over time, it got lost in the everyday stuff that happens? Excuses are made that begin to justify why the task has not been done. The Queen of Sheba was visiting King Solomon, and at the end of her visit, she made this extraordinary claim that the Israelite God had called forth Solomon to be an instrument of justice and righteousness. She was correct, yet this important mission had somehow gotten lost amidst the daily bureaucratic tasks associated with running a country. The only problem is that the extraordinary claim made by the queen matched the mission God had set before Solomon and the Israelites. How often have we forgotten who we were called to be? How often have we made excuses for why it is that we are not doing the real mission to which we have been called? It’s a challenging question for everyone, and on this day when national pride culminates with parades and BBQ’s, let us be mindful of our nation’s lofty vision of freedom and equality.

Prayer: Gracious God, keep me as far away from the busy work that can distract me from the real work of Christ. Amen.
