Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 2nd Corinthians 12:10
Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.

Thought for the Day: Maybe you’re different, but I have witnessed Christians who read a portion of scripture that stated an absurdity, yet they do so without even hesitating for a moment. On their faces, not even a hint of a growing tension or restlessness within their souls. It’s as if some people have been numbed to what should be a shock to the system. Could it be that our anxiety of a truly unleashed Gospel has created an ability to say the words without ever letting them settle within us where they would unnerve even the best of us? Today in worship, we are going to spend time reflecting on the ambiguity often discovered by those striving to follow in the ways of Jesus. It is often said, “All you need to do is believe.” This is true, assuming you understand belief as Jesus and Paul and other early Christians would have understood it. It is to belove God with such passion that one becomes vulnerable to the spirit of God who will take you on an adventure like you never could have imagined. Most folks would prefer to simply accept the idea of Jesus, while keeping the shocking nature of the Jesus message at a comfortable distance. To really let it in is to take a risk…but the joy found in that risk is immeasurable.

Prayer: Lord God, may I never become too comfortable with your Gospel of radical love. The moment I’m too comfortable is the moment I no longer will appreciate its far-reaching and transformative power. Amen.
