Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 1st Samuel 17:16-18
For forty days the Philistine came forward and took his stand, morning and evening. Jesse said to his son David, “Take for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to your brothers; also take these ten cheeses to the commander of their thousand. See how your brothers fare, and bring some token from them.”

Thought for the Day: As I think about our Dare to Dream Dinner happening this Sunday, I am drawn to the words of Harriet Tubman who said, “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” When the political rhetoric is downright ugly and hate permeates so much of society, it is easy to lose hope and question whether we can make any difference. The great witnesses from scripture and Christian history remind us that hopelessness in the face of great obstacles is the only real enemy of divine transformation. Let us be the dreamers who have an unquenchable passion to change the world. Remember, David approached a great obstacle – we know him as Goliath – yet despite his size, hopelessness was nowhere to be found.

Prayer: When hopelessness shows up, Mighty Lord, I request a good kick in the pants. Remind me that for every Goliath-moment, there is a David. Amen.
