My son got a loft bed for his birthday last year. When we moved out of our home in Florida and into a temporary apartment, we did not put it back together. The other night, Donna and I took on the task of rebuilding it now that we are settled in our new home. The one small hinderance in the process was the lack of instructions. We were sure we had put them with all the hardware, but there were no instructions to be found. As I have gotten older, I have become more dependent on instructions. There was a day when I scoffed at the 12 page manual for the new bookcase. It was as if the use of instructions somehow undermined my manhood. Now 40+ years into life and many bookcases, desks, chairs, treadmills and other ‘Assembly Required’ purchases later, I take the instruction book very seriously. I might be able to figure it out without the manual, but wisdom tells me to seek the guidance of someone who has already seen the project from beginning to end.
