Scripture: Jeremiah 1:19-20
You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; for your anger does not produce God’s righteousness.
Thought for the Day: Alexander Campbell always seemed to believe in the great potential of the community, along with the Holy Spirit’s work within the community. In talking about differing opinions within the community, he wrote, “…if it (the opinion) be a wrong private opinion, it will die a natural death much sooner than if you attempt to kill it.” Our attempts to kill other people’s opinions usually result in a more solidified viewpoint that s/he will be willing to defend to the death. Approaching someone respectfully and creating space where people are truly heard is more liking to bring down the defenses. In the end, you might hear something that makes you realize that your opinion is the one that needs to die.
Prayer: As I breathe in your Spirit, O Holy One, may it slow down my words just long enough to hear the words of others. Amen.
