Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 14:33
So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions.

Thought for the Day: My sister posted a quote from the late George Carlin.  He said, “Trying to be happy by accumulating possessions is like trying to satisfy hunger by taping sandwiches all over your body.”  Though I have often enjoyed Mr. Carlin’s humor, I really never thought of him as one who would offer insight into God’s economics.  Contrary to the opinion of many who have tried to make Jesus into some possession obsessed consumer, Jesus was in fact an example of someone who understood how easy it is for people to become owned by their possessions.  Jesus suggested that limiting our possessions is the means to a healthy relationship with him and with God.  With my recent move, I got a good sense of my possessions.  I don’t know if I am doing very well in following the teaching of Jesus.

Prayer: Loving God, in this world where more is always understood as better, assist me as I simplify for the sake of my relationship with you and with those who I have been called to serve.  Amen.

  1. As I look at my recent bathroom remodels, pending flooring replacements, house insurance, house property tax, car insurance, car property tax, car licensing, phone, cell phone, internet, and cable bills I begin to wonder when my stuff came to own me instead of the other way around.
